Describe an advertisement that made you want to buy something.

ad for a game when I was a kid, old bearded guy, cute asian girl, game looked smart, kind of like backgammon, just a game but looked difficult, liked games anyway, liked spy/detective movies, parets liked that sstuff, ad looks very daggy now, did buy the product, didn’t pay it often,

When I was a small boy I saw an ad for a board game, I honestly can’t remember the name of the game but it was a sort of small variation on backgammon…- you have a number of counters, you try to move them from one end of the board to another, and there’s different rules about, when you pile them up, if you have two black counters you can’t move a white counter on to them- you know that kind of thing…

..anyway, I remember the advertising for the game made it look very intelligent and clever and a bit suspenseful. .My main memory of it is an older man with a slightly greying beard and a very nice suit, sitting down, looking elegant. Next to him there was an attractive asian woman in a white dress….looking a bit enigmatic., you know, like she knew some kind of secret……and they were playing this board game…and the whole thing looked a bit like something from a Bond movie.

……I’m a sucker for that kind of thing…….when I was young people were crazy about James Bond..and spy stories in general. .My parents loved that sort of stuff..they took us out to see all the Bond movies and we often watched spy stories on tv. .I suppose the atmosphere of the ad …really appealed to me. As I say, it made the product look very interesting and intelligent. You know, I think at some level. I felt like I would be a cool intelligent person if I could play that game……I did actually play it and….it’s just a mini version of backgammon, it’s pretty easy, nothing too complicated, but it got me in.

1. Do you think people have more free time today than they did before?

No, I wouldn’t say they do, at least for the majority of people anyway. Because if you think about it, the workload that students have at school is continually getting bigger. And at work, it seems that people are working longer hours than before. So yeah, I think it’s generally the case that people have less free time than they used to.

2. What are the sources of pressure in people’s lives?

The sources of pressure? Um, well I suppose it’s different for different age groups. So in other words, for children, I think it comes from always trying to live up to their parents expectations. So when children take exams, for example, they are terrified of letting their parents down. And in terms of adults, I guess the sources of pressure are a bit more varied, for instance pressure to get married, have children, buy a house, and get a stable income.

3. How do you think people can deal with this pressure?

That’s a good question, and thinking about it, I’d say one thing that they could do is to let those close to them know how they’re really feeling, instead of keeping it bottled in. And I know it sounds a bit simple, but I think in this way, friends and family will be able to help someone share the burden they are feeling, and hopefully help them get rid of the pressure. Or at the very least, they can support them in dealing with it.

4. Do you think teamwork is important?

Yeah, I’d say it’s extremely important, because I mean so much of what we do in life involves working together with others. And not only that, but I think it’s also true to say that what we can achieve with others is so much more than what we can achieve individually.

5. In the future, do you think students will be studying and working more as individuals or more in groups?

Well it’s hard to say for certain, but my guess would be that students will probably be working more in groups.And the reason for this, I think, is that group work develops a wider range of skills in students than individual study.

So I’d say it’s likely that group work will be the preferred method of study in the future. And I mean, it seems to be that schools and universities have already realized the value that doing group work brings to students, because a lot more of it is being done now.

6. Do you think the Internet has brought people closer together, or has it created a greater gap between people?

That’s an interesting question, and I know there are arguments for both, but my personal feeling is that the Internet has generally brought people closer together. I mean, admittedly, there’s nothing that can really replicate the value of face-to-face communication. But when that’s not possible, you know, being able to communicate with each other through the Internet has helped a lot in bringing people closer, including those that we would never have known if it wasn’t for the Internet.

7. In the future, do you think these inventions will lead to people spending time with each other people less than they do today?

I don’t think it will make too much difference to be honest with you, because the way I see it, what determines whether we spend more or less time with each other is not so much the technology we use, but the decisions we make in life, for example how we prioritize our time.
